Greetings. This script can be used on the first day of ASSISTments. For more details on how students and teachers make accounts in ASSISTment go to:

Notes for Teacher

If you have a projector have one student login from the computer attached to the screen and then walk through the first problem together, getting it wrong and showing students how scaffolding questions work and how to use hints.

If you have a projector in the room show the item reports once you have some data. When students are done with the first problem set (or if you have 10 minutes or so left in class) show them the item report from their work, Show the star report next to someone’s name and the details on the scaffolding questions. Show examples of students using hints correctly (encourage them to use but not abuse the hints). Use the anonymous feature if you want.

Script

Teacher: Today we are going to do some math problems in the computer lab. Each of you should have a piece of paper and pencil in order to solve the problems. Once the problem has been solved you will input the answer into the system. If you get it correct the system will tell you that you are correct. If you get the problem wrong you will be told it is wrong and then get some help working through the problem. This help will come in the form of other questions. Make sure you read the questions carefully and answer what is being asked. Click on “request help” to get some advice if you do not know what to do. Use this feature to get help but be sure to really read the help because I can see how long you took to read it.

Teacher: Here are a few things to remember when you input an answer.

  • For fractions use the back slash “/” for ½ type in 1/2
  • The system does not speak a language so you must only type in a number answer.
  • For an answer 3.4 feet just type in 3.4
  • For an answer 45% just type in 45
  • The system will recognize equivalent numbers
  • 45 = 45.0 = 90/2
  • Read carefully you may be asked to round to a specific digit.

Teacher: Now lets login:

  • Go to www.assistment.org
  • Click on Sign Up.
  • Click on “student” and then on our school.
  • Now fill out your information, make sure to change the year. Leave the time Zone on “Eastern Time” If you do not have a middle name just leave it blank.
  • Use _________________ for your password.
  • When you are done click “Submit” once and wait there until everyone is done.
  • Now take out your _________________ and write your login name down and a hint for yourself to remember your password.

Teacher: Now my name is Cristina Lindquist Heffernan and my birthday is November 1st.

On Board: Cristina Lindquist Heffernan Nov 1

Teacher: Look at your login name and at my name and birthday. Raise your hand if you can tell me what my login name should be.

Students: Reply

On board: cristinalh1101

Teacher: Notice the 0 in front of the 1. For your login you must have 4 digits. If you don’t have a middle name the middle initial is just not there.

Teacher: Everyone click on “Tutor” at the top of your page. Now enroll in a class. Select my name and _______________________. You section is ________________. Click on Enroll!

Teacher: Remember what I told you earlier.

  • Do not use units
  • Read each question carefully.
  • Use your paper and pencil to solve the problem. This is the paper I used to go through the problems on this problem set, you should have at least this much writing on your paper. Also write the ASSISTment number on your paper before you start your work.

Teacher: Now go to “Show Assignments” and click on assignment number ______ and start working.
