The ASSISTments Correction Worksheet.

Jack Rafferty’s 8th grade class.

Overview:

  1. Have students respond in writing when they get a problem wrong on the system.
  2. Explain to students how to fill out the ASSISTments Hints worksheet on any problem they get wrong. Practice this in the computer lab.
  3. Review and respond to their writing.

Day 1

I assigned the problem set N.4.8 and N.7.8-Exponents-and-Scientific-Notation (7 items) today. Lately I have been concerned about students gaming the system by using too many hints and not really trying to make sense of the problem. Therefore, I am using the ASSISTment Correction Worksheet that you see at the end of this case. If a student gets a problem incorrect on the first try they have to fill out this form.

My goal in the lab today is to make sure the students know how to use this ASSISTment Correction Worksheet. While they worked, I had them use the worksheet and I went around and helped them fill it out, making sure everyone understood what I expected.

When there were 5 minutes left in the period, I asked for volunteers who would not mind if I shared what they had written on their forms. Then I read their responses aloud. I was surprised at how proud many of them were willing to share their comments.

Day 2

Before we went to the lab today, I shared some of the written responses students had made on the Hints Worksheets. I did this to show them how proud I was of the students who really reflected on their work and to show that I was paying close attention to their writing. Here are some examples of good student responses:

ASSISTment Number I did not get the question correct because:
2672 I though I was supposed to do the multiplication first
2672 I didn’t go in the order parenteses, exponents, multiplication, division, additon, subtraction.
2669 I was counting the amount of zeros in 25,800,000

I also pointed out poor responses and told the students they would not get full credit for such responses. Here are some examples of poor responses:

ASSISTment Number I did not get the question correct because:
4511 I thought it was tricking me.
2672 I was careless
11952 I didn’t understand the question
10302 I’m not good at it

The work in the lab was much better today and I noticed that students slowed down because they don’t want to have to write up a response on the Hints worksheet.
