Description

Donna Lee works at a Vocational School and sees her students every other week. On Friday before Shop week she assigns a problem set of about 8 10th grade MCAS problems for them to solve. She selects the more challenging problems for this homework assignment so students have plenty of time to work them out.

Over the next week students are expected to solve the problems on ASSIStment, if they get it wrong they work through the tutoring provided by the system. Then for all the problems they get wrong they have to write up a written explanation of why they got the problem wrong and how to do it correctly. They are all given a rubric when they start to help guide them in doing their work well.

On Monday when they return Ms. Tignor collects their work and grades the written explanations using the rubric. She then records the students original ASSIStment score and their updated score. The updated score is in response to the written explanations. If they are quality they then make the problem count as correct.

On Thursday Ms. Tignor has the students do Learning Log problems that come from the weeks lessons and from ASSISTment. She copies problems from the shop week homework problems and has the student do it again. In the classes I observed 20 of the 23 students got the problem correct on the second try.

Once a Month on Friday during the weekly exam Ms. Tignor conferences with each student on their work with the ASSISTment homework. She offers suggestions on their writing and shows them their progress.

Notes from Class Dec 3, 2009

  • When Ms. Tignor went over problem 2 from ASSISTment students remembered the animated tutoring and the green adn red lines. The student said "Two sides have to ad up to ore than the other, It would nt be a triangle if th ebase wer 12 and the legs were 6 and 6 "The base can't be the same as the two legs."
  • Ms Tignor told her students "Last year I learned how to use the program with the students. It was really hard" "It was embarrassing not knowing how things worked"
  • Student were really excited to know they knew how to do the problem in the journal. Many of them had learned how to do the problem from the tutoring and were very clear about their explanations.
  • Students saw #2 and were clear to say "that is the one we all got wrong on ASSISTment." Their was a clear sense that they recognized it.
  • She selects the work from material they have just studied or material that is coming up.
  • She prints out the item report to help her with her grading. Having the hard copy to writ on is beneficial in keeping track of her work.
