Ideas for involving Fellows in "teaching" the Lesson
I think that the fellow should address the students telling them what the assignment is of the day and communicating expectations. That way it would send a message to the students that the teacher and the fellow have collaborated in developing the lesson. If the lesson has a practical application it might also help if the fellow addressed "when" the skill(s) would be used in real life. Students always want to know "when am I ever going to use this". I think that we need to use the fellows more as a role model.
My plans for ASSISTment in 2010-11
Feb 6, 2010
The visit to Donna Lee's class really helped me focus on my plans for ASSISTment in 2010. If I am teaching Algebra I Part II again next year, I plan to assign a problem set in class (5 problems at most), like Donna Lee did. The problem set would probably be a skill that I need to reinforce because it is on MCAS but don't want to spend a lot of time on it. The students would be given about 15 minutes to complete the five problems and then we would use the data to drive a discussion, just as Donnal Lee did. Then based on the data I would assign a proficiency problem set(s) or an additional problem set (due the following week). I also plan to give an open response question every other week and have the students critique the essays and showcase good and poor responses.
success story
I don't have an individual success story but I felt that when I gave mastery problem sets on material that we were learning, quiz scores were often better, provided that the student mastered.
