PIMSE Fellows in the Classroom
From TeacherWiki
Description of Fellow's teaching routine
- Algebra I Part II
- Introduce students to ASSISTment by helping them complete their first ASSISTment and POW (problem of the week).
- Tuesday mornings Zach meet with Kristen and Sue to review and analyze reports, specifically reports from the previous week POW, and creating a lesson plan for Thursday's POW.
- Thursday Zach will work in the lab with students to discuss previous POW responses (good responses, responses that need some clarification, common mistakes) and then begin the new POW.
- Essay critique, before school choose the common essays make a critique assignment. Fellow drives while fellow and teacher review the critiques. Teacher can also keep records of student participation.
- Have the fellow go over the Bell work (do now)(warm up). Have this be a problem that was triggered by and ASSISTment data.
- Stations. One of the stations is ASSISTments and the fellow runs a non-assistment center. Could either respond to or prepare for what is at the ASSISTments station. This allows teacher to do small group work for 10 min or so with other students.
- Allow fellow to introduce a Tech topic of the day. This would be to get the student interested in computer science. Tech connection to the math you are doing.
- Allow Fellow to advance your work with the smart board. He can find good material from the internet to use.
- Fellow becomes a coach on a particular objective to one or more students either in the lab or in group work. There should be clear objectives as to what the reason this student was chosen and what the goal is for them to reach by the end of the coaching.
Ideas for ininvolving Fellows in "teaching " the lesson
- Essay Grading - The students complete an ORQ prior to arriving in class. Then a few responses are selected to critique. The fellow then runs a class discussion evaluating the critiques and makes students justify the scores they gave each response.
- Stations - The class is broken into small groups to rotate through three stations. One station is to complete an assignment on Assistment, one station works with the teacher, and the last station works with the fellow.
- Computer Science Presentation - Fellow gave presentation to class to explain what computer science is and what a computer scientist does/job opportunities. This fit in nicely with the selection of HS course electives.
- Calculator Programing and Features - Fellow demonstrated how to enter programs into the calculator. Fellow also showed how the calculators features can be incorporated into the curriculum.
