Ideas for involving Fellows in "teaching" the Lesson
My idea for the teaching fellow includes a variety of tasks. First, they would work individually with a student who is struggling. Second, they would create problem sets from the geometry book. Finally, the fellow would help in the lab, helping students who request assistance while working with assistments.
A success story with my teaching fellow, Paul Gibler, involved his work with an individual student who was struggling with area of polygons. Paul showed him how to problem solve by breaking the question into simpler problems that he already knew how to answer. The fellow recognized that the student did not want to problem solve himself, and instead was hoping to be given the steps to solve the problem from the fellow.
My plans for ASSISTment in 2010-11
Thus far my routine has been to assign several homework assistments focused on algebra review. My goal is to assess what algebra techniques need a formal lesson versus the techniques that just need a quick review and more practice. For example, order of operations seemed to be a skill that many students just needed a quick review and more practice. Linear equations was a topic that needed a formal lesson.
