Ideas for involving Fellows in "teaching" the Lesson
My plans for ASSISTment in 2010-11
In Class
Routine
Every day we have "long block" which is 2 hours long and is when all the kids go to lunch. What I have been doing is during first lunch I teach them the lesson.
During the second lunch, we practice the material, either in partners, in groups, outside/inside circle etc. Third lunch we go to lunch and then fourth lunch we go the computer lab and do assistments.
The work they do in there is considered classwork and gives me an idea of where they stand. I typically use mastery learning problem sets that have already been created. I also use regular problem sets.
Reflections
One thing I realized early on is that the kids require vastly different amounts of time to complete the problem sets. I created a new class called "Extra Practice" where I put some problem sets on "old" material.
The kids receive bonus points for any "Extra Practice" they do after they finish the classwork.
Out of Class
Routine
I have been trying to give Assistment HW about once a week. If it is Mastery Learning, I give them 2 days and typically assign 3 problem sets.
I have been grading these strictly on effort and simply reaching "Mastery" - treating it more as a formative assistment.
If it is a "Textbook Quick Sequence" I usually give 6 key problems and I grade it out of 5 points. This is a summative assessment in that I am looking for accuracy and not just effort.
Reflections
It has been very interesting changing the students philosophy on HW. They are so used to effort based grading and to
actually be judged on correctness has been a culture shift
