Ideas for involving Fellows in "teaching" the Lesson
Sit down at the beginning of the year to plan which lessons the fellows would be comfortable teaching. Also share resources that would help them with their lesson planning.
Observe a lesson and help a student who is struggling.
My plans for ASSISTment in 2010-11
Assistment as hw assessment
I have used assistment as an assessment (mostly for hw) for all three Algebra 2 classes that I teach.
1) I go over the problem set in the in class. (Reports, assess, problem set). We start with the problems with the lowest success rate and then move up to the other problems. We look at the answers and analyze how the students arrived at this answerr. We then go over the mistake and solve the problem.
AN example on a recent assistment that we did in class on exponents from problem set 29, on the first problem shown below,
(3^4-3^2)/9
where the success rate was 45% and the common answer was 1. It appears that the students subtracted the exponents as they thought of it as a^(m-n)
2) I then make up (or get) problems on these skills that reinforce these concepts.
I plan to continue to develop asssitment problems for the algebra 2 classes that I teach and also use it in conjunction with the text (use assistment to type in the problem numbers from the text). I am hoping to have some proficiency (mastery) problem sets before the start of next year that I could use in my classes for next year.
I also plan to use the resources (students from school) to help me build problem sets (if this is feasible) as I have students who take computer programming classes and have very good math skills.
sucess story
I have used assistment mostly as a review of Algebra 1 concepts for my incoming Algebra 2 class and the kids have certainly benefited from it.
I have also used the mastery problem sets a lot as homework/tutoring for students whom I have tutored in Algebra 1
