Ideas for involving Fellows in "teaching" the Lesson
I would suggest that based on a topic that students are having difficulty learning (teacher
would advise this), the fellow creates an interesting problem/activity to catch their attention
and involve the students in discussionsas a agroup in solving a problem. And then the students work
on a problem set that assesses what they learned from the activity. The fellow needs to sit and
plan with the teacher using the teachers knowledge of her/his students' ability.
My plans for ASSISTment in 2010-11
I would like to use ASSiSTment to develop my capstone. That is, I would like to come up with
a great question to study. I would like it to be something that it would benefit the student, would
increase their MCAS scores, something that I would share with other staff on a school meting. Today
seemed very interesting the fact that we could use the IQP students for this research. And I think I will.
Reflection
I feel that I am not doing anything with Assisstment. We were MAP testing for the month of October,
so I could not take the students to the computer lab for a whole month. I had assigned problem sets
with due dates but many of our students do not have computer or internet access at home. Few of them
stayed after school to complete the assignments, but as i said, they were just few of them. How can I
hold all of them accountable if some of them are trying really hard, some not even login in? Now that
the testing finished the first day available in the computer lab will be the Monday right before the
Thanksgiving break. I am thinking on how to use the five computers i have in my room in such a way that
the students that are using the computers do not miss the topic taught to the others.
February 6,2010
During the rest of this year, I plan to use the ASSISTment to reinforce problem solving skills through open response problems.
We (my fellow and I) started this routine that consists of him leading the discussion while students are working on the
computer and me in on the back of the class recording on a Google document the participation. Students have found this fact
interesting and each one of them wants to participate in the discussion. After most of them finish the open response,
we generate an essay critique. So the students start critiquing each other’s answers.
A routine that I’d like to start is the parent communication feature. I don’t know how many parents would actually have
and e-mail account, but I bet this number may be surprising.
